Vertikales Wasserbecken - Granit - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)
A tall natural granite chôzu'bachi 手水鉢 (water basin), from a single naturally shaped stone.
The basin is fashioned from an irregular block of granite, retaining its organic exterior while the interior has been carefully hollowed into a water reservoir. Its gently tapering form and asymmetrical rim reflect the Japanese appreciation for the natural character of stone. The weathered surface displays an attractive patina with subtle variations in colour and texture acquired over time.
A chôzu'bachi, also referred to as a tsukubai 蹲 when used in tea gardens, serves as a water reservoir for ritual hand and mouth cleansing before entering a tea ceremony, Buddhist temple, or Shintô shrine. Beyond its practical function, it embodies the Japanese aesthetic appreciation of simplicity, natural materials, and spiritual preparation.
Period:
Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912).
Dimensions:
Height 55 cm, Width 38 cm, Depth 30 cm.
In very good original condition, with wear consistent with age. For stability, the basin is intended to be partially buried, approximately 8 cm into the ground. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
For safe transport, the basin will be carefully packed and shipped on a wooden pallet.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
