A refined and unusual three-tiered lacquer jûbako 重箱 (stacked food container) of upright rectangular form with softly lobed corners. The exterior is richly decorated in shades of gold takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer) and hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer) on a vibrant red ground. The flush-fitting (inrôbuta) tiers adorned with a continuous design of nine fan-shaped panels, heightened with a dense e-nashiji ground. Within these fans are finely detailed motifs including chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura), a hô-ô 鳳凰 (phoenix), a minogame 蓑亀 swimming in water, pine trees 松 (matsu), sparrows 雀 (suzume), and peonies 牡丹 (botan). The decoration is further enriched with minute kirigane 切金 (cut gold foil). The rims are finished with a brocade-style band, while the interior is lacquered in a warm red tone with gold fundame edges. The jûbako is housed in an unusual kiri (paulownia) wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box) with an attractive dark brown aged patina, with openwork mokkô-shaped sides allowing the contents to be partially visible. The edges are decorated with bands of gold hiramaki-e on a roiro ground, depicting cherry blossoms and pine trees. The bottom of the tomobako with a black lacquered removable panel above another compartment.
