Item Description This small Japanese chest of drawers is crafted from zelkova wood (keyaki), prized for its rich grain figuring and warm reddish-brown tone. The piece would originally have served as a small tool or document cabinet (tebako/tedansu type), the kind of compact storage furniture historically used in Japanese homes and workshops for organising small items. The chest features six drawers: two smaller drawers side by side across the top, fitted with round metal pulls, and four larger drawers below fitted with scalloped cast metal drop handles. The drawer fronts display attractive burl-like figuring in the keyaki grain, while the drawer interiors are left in a lighter, unstained wood, showing traditional joinery. Faint chalk numbering can still be seen inside two of the drawers, a common feature of older Japanese furniture used to keep drawers matched to their openings. The case is finished with a warm lacquer-type coating that has developed a rich patina with age. The top surface shows visible wood-jointed corners, and the sides are of plain board construction consistent with traditional cabinet-making. Condition Consistent with age, the piece shows surface wear including scattered scratches, light surface soiling, and finish wear to the top and edges, as visible in the photographs. All six drawers open and close. No structural damage or missing parts have been noted upon visual inspection.
