Miltonduff Distillery Trivia The backbone of Ballantine's: Miltonduff produces vast quantities of whisky, but the overwhelming majority is used as a key malt for the famous Ballantine's blended whisky. For this reason, Miltonduff bottles sold as Single Malts (especially 21-year-old Single Cask versions) are rare and highly prized by collectors. The distillery stands on the site of the ancient mill belonging to the historic Pluscarden Abbey. The water used for distillation comes from the Black Burn stream; its source was blessed by an abbot in the 15th century. Origin of the name: The distillery began as an illegal operation under the name *Milton*. The suffix "*Duff*" was added later to pay tribute to the Dukes of Fife (the Duff family), the historic landowners of the area. The Mosstowie legend: Between 1964 and 1981, special "Lomond" stills were installed at the distillery to produce a slightly different style of whisky, marketed under the name Mosstowie. Today, that type of still is no longer in use, and old bottles of Mosstowie are considered auction rarities.
