An attractive and historically important gold solidus struck during the reign of Theodosius II (AD 402–450), one of the longest-reigning emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire. His reign witnessed the construction of the famous Theodosian Walls of Constantinople and the publication of the Theodosian Code, one of the most influential legal compilations of Late Antiquity.
This genuine ancient gold solidus weighs 4.35 grams and has been authenticated and graded by NGC Ancients as VF (Very Fine).
Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Theodosius II facing right, with imperial legend around.
Reverse: Constantinopolis seated facing, holding a sceptre and Victory on globe, a classic and highly desirable reverse type of the Eastern Roman Empire.
