Vase - Steinzeug - Japan - Saisji-Technik - Mori Katsushi (森勝資)

Item Description This tall, rectangular ceramic vase is the work of Mori Katsushi (森勝資), a Japanese ceramic artist and member of the Japan Kogei Association (公益社団法人日本工芸会), affiliated with the East Japan Branch, Ceramics Division. Mori is recognised for his distinctive saisji (彩瓷) technique, a form of coloured porcelain decoration, and has been repeatedly selected for the prestigious Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition (日本伝統工芸展), receiving the Japan Kogei Association Prize at the 40th Traditional Kogei Ceramics Division Exhibition in 2012. This piece takes the form of a tapered, faceted rectangular vessel, narrowing gently from a wide base to a small rectangular mouth. The entire surface is covered in an intricate, hand-painted geometric motif reminiscent of scattered bamboo leaves or star-like shards, rendered in soft cream and pale blue tones over a textured grey-blue ground that evokes woven fabric. Small white and blue dot accents punctuate the linear pattern, adding subtle rhythm to the design. The unglazed footed base reveals the warm buff-coloured clay body and bears the artist's small square impressed seal mark, confirming authorship. The combination of architectural form and finely detailed surface decoration reflects the refined sensibility associated with contemporary Japanese studio ceramics, making this vase a striking addition to any collection of modern Japanese craft. Size Height: 23 cm Width: 10.5 cm Depth: 7.5 cm Weight 1208 g Condition The vase has been inspected visually and shows no visible cracks or chips; the glaze surface presents cleanly overall, consistent with careful studio handling. As with hand-finished stoneware, minor natural firing characteristics may be present.
