Untitled, from the Wakamono series - Go Mishima (三島剛) - Japan

Vintage Japanese underground artwork by Go Mishima (三島剛), a distinctive figure in postwar Japanese male figurative illustration and underground visual culture. Created in 1972, this photolithograph on paper belongs to Mishima’s Wakamono (“Young Men”) series. The image is plate signed “三島剛画” in the lower-left area. The work depicts a powerfully built, tattooed young man wrapping a sarashi cloth around his waist. His lowered gaze and restrained movement create a compelling contrast between physical strength and quiet introspection. Mishima’s distinctive style combines idealised male beauty with emotional depth and traditional Japanese imagery. The vivid peonies, waves and colourful tattoo motifs contrast beautifully with the finely rendered figure and subdued background, giving the composition both intimacy and visual power. Mishima’s works occupy a distinctive place within Japanese underground and homoerotic visual culture of the 1960s and 1970s. They are particularly appealing to collectors of postwar Japanese illustration, male figurative art and traditional Japanese tattoo imagery. Good vintage condition, with age-related toning, slight waviness and several small brown spots, mainly in the background and margins. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. The artwork will be carefully packed with rigid protective materials and shipped with tracking. Please note that any import duties, taxes, customs clearance fees or carrier handling charges that may apply are the buyer’s responsibility.
