Description

An authentic Safavid copper Dakhl (alms box), dated AH 1146 (1733–1734 AD), representing the refined artistry of Safavid metalwork from the final years of the Safavid Empire.

Handcrafted from hammered copper, the vessel features a rounded body, a pronounced shoulder, and a broad flared rim. The exterior is extensively decorated with finely engraved bands of elegant Islamic calligraphy, intricate arabesque scrollwork, and dense floral ornamentation, all executed with remarkable precision.

A decorative register around the neck incorporates elongated cartouches enclosing stylised animal motifs, while the broad central band is entirely covered with flowing Persian calligraphy, reflecting the sophisticated aesthetic of Safavid decorative arts.

The underside is centred by a finely engraved circular medallion containing calligraphy surrounded by floral ornamentation. It also bears the engraved date AH 1146 (1733–1734 AD), firmly placing the object in the closing years of the Safavid Dynasty.

Traditionally, Dakhl vessels were used for collecting charitable donations or religious offerings in shrines, mosques, and other sacred places, making them important objects of both religious practice and Persian cultural heritage.
