Sehr seltenes Banner des lamaistischen Exorzismus-Ritus - Baumwolle und natürliche Pigmente - Tibet/Mongolei - Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Rarissime banner of ritual exorcism of a Tibetan Lama or Traditional Oracle ("Lhamo").

Used in certain tantric rites to ward off insurmountable obstacles, this model of banner, unusual in its iconography, was used by some wandering yogis ("Changpa") during their pilgrimages in the Himalayas and unrolled when needed, to perform the ritual practices devoted to the invocation of the Protector "Vajrakilaya" (tib. "Dorjé Phurba").
This deity is depicted turning in its hands this type of three-edged ritual dagger (tib."Phurba") to ward off negative spirits and cut at the root the three perturbing emotions: attachment, anger, and ignorance.

Here the peculiarity of this banner type is its symbolic aspect: 4 daggers positioned at the 4 cardinal points, with in its center a more imposing dagger. The secret mantras recited during the ritual are depicted, including a long "Dharani" ("garland of mantras") that winds around the daggers and links them together! Germs-like letters and very particular sounds (used to cut obstacles at the root) are calligraphed multiple times along the blade drawing that projects flames of Wisdom: "Phet!", "Hri!"...
The letter "Ah" is drawn at the center of each dagger at throat height in a sphere of emptiness of red color: symbol of the power of the Adamantine Speech and of the secret mantras.

Two symbolic astrological seals are drawn on either side of the central dagger.
We will appreciate the quality of the drawing and certain particular details (protuberance on the forehead at the height of the third eye of wisdom, crown of five skulls (symbolizing the five wisdoms), and the top of each dagger "Phurba" topped by a very pretty half-vajra).

A complete object, with its original wooden batons, all fixed on an aged canvas with some minor wear. Beautiful ritual painting to keep in one’s collection!
