A fine six-panel hina’byôbu 雛屏風 (doll Festival folding screen) featuring a tranquil landscape painted in the Kanô School-style against a beautifully oxidised silver leaf ground. The elegant composition depicts an ancient weeping cherry tree 枝垂桜 (shidare’zakura) stretching across the six panels, its arching branches laden with delicate white blossoms above gently rolling green hills. A pair of green Japanese white-eyes 目白 (mejiro) flutter amongst the flowering branches. Executed in colour and ink on silver leaf, the surface has naturally oxidised over time to an attractive aged patina. The screen is finished with two patterned silk brocade border and set within a black lacquered wooden frame. There are several old restorations visible to both sides, including localised paper repairs, losses to the paper and brocade, and general age-related wear. Despite this, the screen retains an attractive overall appearance with a beautiful aged silver patina. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be placed as a standalone piece.
