The damage must be reported to your local post office within 7 days of delivery, and promptly to us and Catawiki support. 【Product details】 A charming pair of Showa period wooden Hyottoko masks, hand-carved and painted with expressive comic features. Hyottoko is a well-known humorous figure in Japanese folk performance, kagura, festival music and traditional dance, often recognised by his puckered red lips and playful facial expression. The two masks show different interpretations of the character. One has a rounded face with both eyes opened wide, giving it a bold and amusing expression. The other follows the more classic Hyottoko style, with one eye narrowed and the other enlarged, creating a strongly asymmetrical and humorous face. Both masks are carved from wood, with visible chisel marks on the reverse that show the hand-carved workmanship. The surface has a glossy hand-painted finish, with red lines, painted brows, red lips and black hair details. Each mask is fitted with a red cord, allowing it to be hung for display or worn for festival-style use. Fair to good vintage condition. There are many fine age-related hairline cracks and crazing in the painted surface. There are areas of paint loss and small chips, especially around protruding parts such as the lips, nose and facial edges. The reverse sides show marks and discolouration, including areas that appear to be old sticker residue. There are also minor scratches, surface dirt, wear, and fading/discolouration to the cords.
