Giuseppe Nuvolone (1619 – 1703), Aus dem Umkreis von - Madonna and Child

Artist: Circle of Giuseppe Nuvolone (Italian, Milan, 1619–1703) Title: Madonna and Child Period: Late 17th Medium: Oil on canvas Format: Vertical composition ⸻ Dimensions – Painting size: approximately 50 × 40 cm – Framed size: not applicable (unframed) ⸻ Description This refined devotional painting depicts the Madonna tenderly holding the Christ Child. The intimate composition, soft expressions, warm flesh tones, and rich red and blue drapery are characteristic of Lombard Baroque religious painting from the late seventeenth century. The work is attributed to the circle of Giuseppe Nuvolone, one of the leading representatives of the Lombard Baroque school. The Virgin’s elongated face, lowered gaze, delicate features, and melancholic expression are particularly close to the devotional figures associated with Nuvolone and his artistic environment. The gentle interaction between the Madonna and Child gives the painting a calm and contemplative atmosphere. The restrained background further emphasizes the figures and reinforces the private devotional character of the work. Technical examination confirmed the presence of an old hand-woven canvas, natural age-related craquelure, layered oil painting, and materials compatible with the proposed period. No visual evidence of modern synthetic pigments or major later compositional changes was observed. ⸻ Signature The painting is unsigned, as is common for devotional works produced within artistic circles and workshops of this period. ⸻ Provenance Private collection, Europe. Earlier provenance is currently undocumented. ⸻ Documentation The painting is accompanied by a professional attribution report issued by Bellagio Auction LLP following visual and technical examination. ⸻ Condition The painting is in stable overall condition considering its age. It presents natural craquelure, surface wear, an aged varnish, and localized old restoration and retouching. These signs are consistent with a painting dating from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. ⸻ Shipping The painting is currently unframed. It will be carefully packed using professional protective materials and shipped with tracking and insurance. ⸻ Additional information about Giuseppe Nuvolone Giuseppe Nuvolone was an important Italian Baroque painter active mainly in Lombardy. Born into a prominent family of painters, he became known for his religious compositions, altarpieces, and intimate devotional images. Works produced within his circle are appreciated for their soft modelling, elegant figures, warm colours, and deeply contemplative atmosphere.
