Item Description Takaoka Bronze Vase with Sixteen-Petal Chrysanthemum Motif by Houun This bronze vase (青銅花瓶) from Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) bears the engraved mark "峰雲" (Houun) on its base. A sixteen-petal chrysanthemum motif (十六弁菊花文) in gold tone (金彩) is set on the front of the vase, standing out against the vase's spare, refined silhouette. The gilt decoration extends across the entire surface, catching the light with a shimmering brilliance that shifts as the piece is viewed from different angles. The surface displays a marbled patina that shifts from green through brown to khaki tones depending on the angle of light, giving the piece a rich, layered depth of color that changes with the viewer's perspective. Takaoka Copperware is a traditional craft of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, dating to 1611, when the local feudal lord Maeda Toshinaga invited seven foundry masters to the castle town to develop its metalworking industry. It was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1975.
