Tafelaufsatz - Murano-Glas – handgeblasen und handgearbeitet
A striking and highly decorative Murano art-glass basket, dating approximately to the 1940s–1950s.
The basket is executed in a vivid turquoise-blue glass, with an exuberantly modelled body composed of numerous individually worked, pulled and pointed glass projections. This sculptural treatment is closely associated with the celebrated “Rostrato” aesthetic developed by Ercole Barovier, in which the surface of the glass becomes dramatically three-dimensional and captures light from constantly changing angles.
The body is surmounted by a substantial clear ribbed glass handle, attached through two elaborate applied terminals incorporating gold-toned/gold-leaf decoration. The contrast between the intensely coloured turquoise body, transparent handle and warm metallic inclusions gives the piece exceptional visual presence.
The basket is particularly attractive when viewed from above, where the irregular sculptural rim surrounds the deep central well and reveals the considerable thickness and complexity of the hand-worked glass. Small bubbles, inclusions and variations visible throughout are consistent with its artisanal manufacture and form part of the character of the piece.
The underside further demonstrates its substantial construction and the extensive manipulation required to create the projecting decoration.
Attribution
Its heavy construction, turquoise glass, clear applied handle, gold-toned inclusions and especially the strongly projected surface treatment show compelling similarities with documented Barovier Rostrato production of the mid-20th century, including period basket forms.
No surviving factory label or signature has been identified on this example; consequently, the attribution is deliberately kept neutral.
Condition
Good vintage condition overall.
Please examine the detailed photographs carefully, which form an integral part of the condition description. The photographs intentionally show the glass from multiple angles, including the interior, underside, handle and applied decorative elements.
Natural bubbles, inclusions, irregularities and variations resulting from the handmade glassmaking process are visible and have intentionally not been concealed or digitally removed.
