[Chōkōsai Eishō / 鳥高斎栄昌 (active c. 1790s)] Beauty After a Bath (Facsimile Edition) / [復刻版] 湯上り美人 - Chōkōsai Eishō - Japan

Chōkōsai Eishō, the leading star pupil of Hosoda Eishi, was one of the master portraitists of the Kansei era (1789–1801). Rivaling Kitagawa Utamaro in popularity during the 1790s, Eishō excelled in capturing the quiet elegance and intimate domestic moments of Edo women. This captivating design, titled "Beauty After a Bath" (Yuagari Bijin), presents a woman engaged in personal grooming immediately after stepping out of the bath. As noted, this print is a high-quality facsimile edition, meticulously executed to reproduce the graceful linework, subtle color palette, and serene atmosphere of the original Kansei-period masterwork. The composition captures a woman crouching comfortably on the floor, draped in a loose light-blue bathrobe adorned with dark tie-dye (shibori) patterns. Her garment slips slightly open at her chest in a natural, unposed manner typical of post-bath genre scenes. Holding a pair of traditional Japanese metal snips (hasami), she carefully trims her fingernails with quiet concentration. Beside her, a green bamboo screen (sudare) and a hanging paper lantern mounted to a wooden post frame the scene against a soft, warm yellow background. In the lower left, the artist's signature reads "Chōkōsai Eishō ga" (鳥高斎栄昌画), accompanied by the round censor seal (kiwame) and the publisher mark of Yamaguchiya Tōbei (Kintōdō). The print stands as a prime testament to Eishō's ability to infuse everyday domestic routines with sensual grace and aristocratic elegance. Artist Chōkōsai Eishō (active c. 1790s) was the most prominent student of Hosoda Eishi, founder of the Hosoda school. Active during the golden age of ukiyo-e in the 1790s, Eishō was celebrated for his tall, gracefully proportioned bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and striking ōkubi-e (large-head portraits). His sophisticated figure drawings and refined decorative sensibilities earned him a place among the premier woodblock print designers of the late 18th century. Condition Condition as shown in the photographs. Age-related wear consistent with an antique woodblock print. Please examine the photographs carefully before bidding. Shipping The artwork will be carefully packed and shipped via EMS. Shipping will be arranged within approximately 10–14 days after payment confirmation.
