This is an impressive Japanese bronze statue depicting Hotei (Budai), one of the beloved Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin). The statue is signed Jōun (常雲) and is believed to date from approximately the Meiji to Taishō period (late 19th to early 20th century). Hotei is portrayed with a joyful smile and a generously rounded figure, seated beside his large treasure sack while raising an ornamental fan (uchiwa) decorated with an auspicious design.
