Afrikanische Kuba-Zeremonial-Axt (Kilonda) - Kilonda - Kuba - DR Kongo
An exceptional African prestige ceremonial axe, traditionally known as a Kilonda, originating from the Kuba (Bakuba) people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This finely crafted status weapon features a hand-forged crescent-shaped metal blade with three distinctive openwork connecting spurs. The central area of the blade is masterfully engraved on both sides with classic interlocking geometric basketry motifs (sgraffito style), which are highly characteristic of Kuba royal and noble court art.
The robust wooden handle is completely sheathed on its upper section with a meticulously wound, relief-patterned copper or brass wire wrap, providing an intricate texture and displaying the virtuoso technique of traditional blacksmiths. Such axes were never intended for combat, but rather served as emblems of supreme authority, rank, and wealth held by tribal chiefs or dignitaries during ritual events and royal processions.
