History of Auchentoshan Distillery
Founded in 1823 at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills, near Glasgow (on the banks of the River Clyde), Auchentoshan (pronounced Och-en-tosh-an, meaning "corner of the field" in Gaelic) is one of the last active historic distilleries in the Lowlands region. Having survived the bombings of World War II in 1941, it is now owned by the Beam Suntory group.
Interesting Facts
Triple Distillation: Unlike the vast majority of Scottish distilleries that distill twice, Auchentoshan uses continuous triple distillation for all its distillates. This process, more typical of Irish whiskey, produces a very high alcohol content (around 81% ABV), making the final spirit particularly light, delicate, fruity, and with distinct floral notes.
Crater Loch: During the air raids of the war, a bomb fell near the distillery creating a crater that filled with water, now known locally as "Auchentoshan Loch".
