This vintage Japanese black‑urushi four‑tiered Jubako is decorated on the exterior with gold Maki‑e depicting Sho‑chiku‑bai, the auspicious motif of pine‑bamboo‑plum blossom. The interior of each tier is finished with vermilion‑red Urushi lacquer. The complete original set consists of four‑tier boxes, two lids, supporting base and the original wooden Tomobako.
Jubako was historically used during Japanese New‑Year celebrations to hold separate portions of ceremonial festive dishes. Stacked tiers symbolise accumulating good fortune. The four‑tier layout is a traditional formal size, each tier for different foods. It was also used for picnics, cherry‑blossom viewing and seasonal gatherings; the supporting base allows convenient stacking and transport for shared meals. Today antique lacquer Jubako are mostly kept for collection and display, and generally not used for serving food.
Ink inscription on the Tomobako: “Jubako, Shōwa 26 chō, Kimura”. “Shōwa 26 chō” refers to 1951, when the former owner Kimura assembled and completed this set for storage inside the Tomobako. This is **not** the manufacturing date of the lacquerware itself. Judging by shape and Maki‑e style, the lacquer set dates to Early Shōwa period, circa 1930‑1940s.
Due to age, the jubako has chipped lacquer and edge abrasion at multiple corners. The gold maki‑e remains fully intact. These are natural signs of age and historical usage; no repairs have been made to the lacquer body. The original tomobako shows wear, dust accumulation and reinforcement repairs. Overall condition is fair.
