A striking Japanese ceramic flower vase from Shigaraki (信楽), one of Japan’s historic pottery traditions. This elegant vase features a beautifully balanced bottle form with a rounded body, long slender neck and gently flared mouth. Its surface is particularly attractive, combining warm earthy brown and ochre tones with layers of fresh green glaze flowing naturally from the neck and shoulders. The glaze creates irregular drips, speckled textures and areas of fine crazing (kannyū / 貫入), giving the surface considerable depth and character. Dark brown to almost black accents run vertically across parts of the vessel, providing a dramatic contrast with the softer green and sandy tones. Rather than relying on painted decoration, the beauty of this piece comes from the interaction between clay, glaze, firing and natural-looking surface variation—a characteristic aesthetic highly appreciated in Japanese studio pottery. The vase is accompanied by its original fitted wooden storage box (tomobako).
