Reference: SNG Copenhagen 62-3; BMC 300-2. Arados (Arwad) was one of the principal Phoenician city-states, occupying a small fortified island off the Syrian coast. Its powerful fleet and strategic position made it important to Mediterranean trade and Persian naval power. Under Achaemenid rule it retained its own kings and coinage, later submitting peacefully to Alexander the Great in 332 BC and contributing ships to his campaign against Tyre.
