Attributed to Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962) - Young Beautiful Lady

Attributed to Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889 - 1962) oil painting on masonite of a young nude lady looking engagingly at the viewer, with bright red lips. Signed Jean Gabriel Domergue lower right. Like many of the artists paintings this is titled by hand on the back with the sitters name, but it is quite hard to read, could possibly be Anika. The painting is in its original frame. This painting was bought in Cannes, France in the 1960’s by the previous owners uncle who left it to her, along with a similar painting by Domergue. This is a guaranteed authentic painting, being the same size and same board, manufactured by the same company that the artist used regularly. The painting has the same labels attached to the back known to be seen on similar paintings sold at auction in the past. This painting has been authenticated by Noe Willer, the known expert of Jean Gabriel Domergue. Domergue was born in Bordeaux and studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 1911, he was a winner of the Prix de Rome. From the 1920s onward he concentrated on portraits, and claimed to be "the inventor of the pin-up". He also designed clothes for the couturier Paul Poiret, and many famous travel posters for Monte Carlo, Monaco along with others. From 1955 until 1962 he was the curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, organising exhibitions of the works of Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Goya and others. Domergue was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. He died on the 16th of November 1962 in Paris, France.
