Coccosteus cuspidatus – Exceptional Devonian Armoured Fish – Orkney Islands, Scotland A superb and highly evocative specimen of Coccosteus cuspidatus, one of the most iconic placoderm fishes of the famous Old Red Sandstone deposits of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Geological period: Middle Devonian, approximately 385 million years ago. Coccosteus was an arthrodire placoderm, an extinct group of heavily armoured prehistoric fishes that dominated aquatic ecosystems long before the appearance of dinosaurs. Its head and anterior body were protected by articulated bony plates, while the posterior part of the animal was more flexible. Placoderms represent an extremely important chapter in vertebrate evolution and were among the characteristic fishes of Devonian waters. The Orkney Islands are internationally renowned for their exceptionally preserved Middle Devonian fish fauna. At that time, northern Scotland formed part of the vast Orcadian Basin, dominated by large freshwater lakes whose fine sediments created ideal conditions for fossil preservation. This specimen is particularly impressive for its large, clearly visible armoured cranial region and extended axial/tail section, beautifully contrasting against the dark-grey matrix. The natural relief, dark fossilised plates and overall composition give the piece a striking, almost sculptural appearance.
