Kuba Palmweinbecher – Mitte des Jahrhunderts, anthropomorphisch - Mbwoongntey - Kuba - DR Kongo (Ohne mindestpreis)
Hand-carved indigenous "Mbwoongntey" (ceremonial palm wine cup) from the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This prestige vessel is masterfully sculpted from a single piece of dense hardwood, depicting a stylized full-body figure in a traditional squatting posture. In Kuba culture, the "Mbwoongntey" represents the ultimate symbol of wealth and titleship. The head forms the main body of the cup, complete with a hollow rim at the top.
The facial features are highly expressive, detailed with iconic linear scarification marks across the cheeks and forehead, prominent heavy-lidded eyes, and a geometrically patterned coiffure/headdress typical of Kuba nobility. A beautifully integrated curved handle extends from the back of the head to the lower back of the figure, finished with an old piece of organic fiber cord.
Such cups were highly valued personal items owned exclusively by titled court members and chiefs, used during important community gatherings to consume palm wine and project social status. It displays an exceptional dark brown patina with clear signs of age, handling, and traditional use.
Condition: In good condition with beautiful age patina. Minor expected signs of wear, surface micro-cracks, and an old stable insect bore hole/erosion. This is a natural imperfection typical for aged African hardwood. See the pictures.
