A rare three-generation collaboration by one of the most distinguished family lineages in Meiji-era Japanese literati painting. This hanging scroll depicts Benzaiten, the goddess of music, eloquence, wealth and wisdom and the only female among the Seven Lucky Gods, seated upon a rocky outcrop above flowing water, cradling her biwa lute. The figure is rendered with the refined brushwork and luminous mineral pigments of the Nanga (literati) tradition, while a poetic inscription in flowing cursive crowns the composition. What makes this work exceptional is its authorship. It is a genuine collaborative painting by three generations of the Tanomura family: the inscription brushed by Tanomura Chokunyū, the figure of Benzaiten painted by Tanomura Shōsai in his kanreki year (his sixtieth year), and the surrounding rocks and water added by Tanomura Shōkō. Each artist's contribution is individually signed and sealed, in keeping with the documented three-generation collaborations of this celebrated family. The painting is accompanied by its original wooden storage box. 【Artist Profile】 The Tanomura lineage descends from the great literati master Tanomura Chikuden (1777–1835). His adopted heir, Tanomura Chokunyū (1814–1907), became a central figure of Meiji-period Nanga painting, active in Kyoto and Osaka. Chokunyū's own adopted son, Tanomura Shōsai (1845–1909), studied painting under him and served the lord of the Oka domain in Bungo (present-day Oita), excelling in both the brush and martial arts. Shōsai's son, Tanomura Shōkō (1879–1910), learned literati painting from both his grandfather and his father, but died tragically young at thirty-two. All three artists passed away within a few years of one another in the early twentieth century. Works by the Tanomura family are no longer in production.
