Baule - Elfenbeinküste (Ohne mindestpreis)

Carved wooden face mask in the Baule idiom, Côte d'Ivoire. A serene face with closed, downcast eyes, a high domed forehead, three raised scarification bosses, a long narrow nose and a small mouth, below a finely ridged coiffure band and an openwork lozenge crest. The face sits within a broad, flat oval flange with a white kaolin zigzag border and notched sides. Carved from a single block of wood and hollowed at the back, with visible hand-gouge marks and attachment holes through the rim. Attribution and age: the attribution is stylistic rather than documented. The face follows the Baule vocabulary of Côte d'Ivoire, while the broad painted flange is a decorative elaboration rather than a feature of classic Baule portrait masks. The dating is an estimate from surface condition — kaolin worn off the high points but surviving in the recesses, a dark patina, and old losses that are patinated rather than fresh. There is no documented provenance, and no claim of ceremonial use is made here. Condition: honest wear, no restoration. A vertical shrinkage split runs down through the crest and the lozenge, with some wood loss at the top edge. A crack runs from the eye down through the cheek; it is stable. The kaolin is thick and crusty and flakes in places — it has been left exactly as found and has not been touched up. There are chips and losses around the flange, all dark and patinated rather than freshly broken. Material: wood with white kaolin pigment. No ivory, bone, hide, hair, teeth or feathers — no CITES-restricted materials. Dimensions: approx. 56 x 25 x 16 cm. Weight: approx. 1,950 g (approx. 3,000 g packed). Shipping: sent tracked from the Netherlands.
