A vessel modelled as a shisa, the Okinawan lion-dog, in glazed stoneware. The form is a bottle: a filling opening rises from the shoulders behind the head. The beast is shown standing with the mouth open and one forepaw resting on a ball. The mane, brows, ears, tail and paws are picked out in a dark brown-black glaze, laid over a cream and pale grey body glaze that pools in the modelling. The mane and tail are deeply combed and curled, and the face is modelled with bulging eyes, a broad muzzle and bared teeth. The base is unglazed, showing the buff stoneware body. Condition as visible in the photographs: the piece is intact, with no chips, cracks or restoration visible. There is normal glaze pooling and small kiln specks consistent with hand-made stoneware.
