Kaki-Baum mit Hahn und Henne - Seide - Kawabata Gyokushō - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)

Short description of the item and its origin This is a fine Japanese Meiji‑period hanging scroll executed on silk by the renowned Maruyama‑school artist Kawabata Gyokushō, with traditional silk‑brocade mounting. The painting depicts a fruiting persimmon tree laden with unripe fruits, alongside a splendid rooster and hen resting on the grassy bank. In Japanese art, persimmons and paired chickens carry auspicious symbolic meaning: persimmons represent good fortune, while roosters symbolize vigour and wellbeing. The work features delicate, realistic brushwork typical of the Maruyama school, blending Japanese naturalistic painting techniques with Chinese bird‑and‑flower traditions. The lower‑left section bears the artist’s original brush signature and matching red artist’s seal. The scroll is well‑preserved, retaining its antique original mounting. Collector’s Value & Benefits ‑ Authentic signed silk work by Kawabata Gyokushō, a leading master of the Meiji‑era Maruyama school. Silk‑based Japanese scrolls are highly sought‑after among Western collectors. ‑ Auspicious bird‑and‑flower subject matter, combining persimmon and chicken motifs which represent good luck and prosperity. This theme is well‑recognised on the European Asian art market. ‑ Superb naturalistic brushwork characteristic of the Maruyama school, fine detail rendering on feathers, leaves and fruit. ‑ Complete antique brocade mounting, ready‑to‑hang for display in living rooms, studies or oriental‑themed interiors; also a solid addition to Japanese Meiji painting collections.
