Knightia alta Fossil Fish – Eocene – Green River Formation, Wyoming, USA A well-preserved fossil fish from the famous Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA, dating to the Eocene. Based on the relatively deep-bodied proportions visible in the specimen, this example is more consistent with Knightia alta than with the more slender and much more common Knightia eocaena. K. alta is one of the two recognized Knightia species from Fossil Lake and is distinguished principally by its deeper body profile. The fossil preserves a clearly defined body outline, vertebral column, fins and caudal region, with warm brown fossilized remains contrasting attractively against the pale limestone slab. The head and rib structure remain visible, giving the specimen strong anatomical and display interest. As visible in the photographs, the slab has been prepared and consolidated to stabilize and preserve the fossil.
