Manpo Kojo-zoroe Set aus 8 - Papier - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)

Item Description This lot consists of a set of eight antique Japanese books (wahon), each produced using traditional woodblock printing (mokuhanbon) and bound in the classic Japanese stab-binding style (fukuro-toji). The covers vary in colour, including red, indigo-blue, and dark brown-black tones, several bearing original paper title labels (daisen) pasted to the front board. One volume is clearly identifiable by its title label as 万宝古状揃 (Manpō Kojō-zoroe), a well-known orai-mono - a category of textbook compiled for terakoya (temple school) education during the Edo period, used to teach reading, writing, and the conventions of formal letter composition through model correspondence. The remaining volumes share a similar format, paper stock, and binding style, and appear to belong to the same broad genre of educational or reference texts, though their individual titles have not been fully confirmed. Interior pages viewed show columns of cursive kanji and kana text alongside small woodblock illustrations, a layout typical of orai-mono and related instructional texts of the period. As a set, these books offer an evocative glimpse into pre-modern Japanese literacy education and printing craft, and would appeal to collectors of Japanese antiquarian books, calligraphy, or Edo-period ephemera. Size Width: 18.5 cm Depth: 27 cm Weight 968 g (total, set of 8) Condition The books show wear consistent with age and handling: covers are worn, creased, and in places torn or chipped, with some title labels partially missing or damaged; corners and spines show fraying, and page edges display toning and soiling typical of old washi paper. No conservation or restoration work has been carried out; the set is offered in as-found condition. Additional Information Origin: Japan Format: 8 volumes, woodblock-printed (mokuhanbon), traditional Japanese stab binding (fukuro-toji) Identified title (one volume): 万宝古状揃 (Manpō Kojō-zoroe), an Edo-period orai-mono letter-writing textbook NOITICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation.
