Teikin Orai & Senjimon 7-teiliges Set - Papier - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)

Item Description This lot comprises a set of seven antique Japanese woodblock-printed books (wahon), dating to the Edo period. The set includes multiple copies of the celebrated educational text Teikin Ōrai (庭訓往来), a model-letter primer traditionally used in terakoya temple schools to teach reading, writing, and correspondence etiquette, together with the compendium Shinzō Kojō-zoroe Taizen (新増古状揃大全). The printed title label on the latter bears the imprint "Bunkyū shinkoku" (文久新刻), indicating that this particular edition was newly issued during the Bunkyū era (1861-1864). One volume also contains pages from the Senjimon (千字文), the classical Thousand Character Classic long used as a text for reading and calligraphy practice, here illustrated with woodblock-printed scenes of mounted warriors and courtly figures. The books are bound in the traditional Japanese stitched (fukurotoji) style, with paper covers in shades of indigo blue, faded red-brown, and mottled grey. Several volumes retain their original printed title labels (daisen). As is typical of well-used Edo-period schoolbooks, the covers show notable wear, staining, and surface loss, with one cover exhibiting a distinct scorch mark. Together, these volumes offer an evocative glimpse into the reading, writing, and moral-education culture of Edo-period Japan, and will appeal to collectors of early Japanese printed books, calligraphy, and educational history. Size Width: 19 cm Depth: 27.5 cm Weight 717 g Condition The covers show significant age-related wear, including surface staining, edge losses, and paper abrasion, with one cover displaying a distinct burn mark; the printed text blocks remain largely intact with toning and handling wear consistent with age, though condition varies between the seven volumes and should be viewed as sold, with no restoration undertaken. Additional Information Origin: Japan, Edo period; one volume bears a Bunkyū-era (1861-1864) publication label Format: woodblock-printed books (wahon), traditional stitched (fukurotoji) binding Notable titles: Teikin Ōrai (庭訓往来), Shinzō Kojō-zoroe Taizen (新増古状揃大全), pages from Senjimon (千字文) Historical use: educational primers (ōraimono) employed in terakoya temple schools for teaching reading, writing, and moral instruction NOITICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation.
