A distinctive vintage/antique absinthe service for two, comprising a substantial cut-glass carafe with faceted stopper, two matching cut-glass drinking glasses and two matching pierced absinthe spoons. The group has been assembled as a coherent two-person absinthe service. The two glasses are matching and each is accompanied by one of the older pierced metal spoons. The spoons feature elongated handles and broad, leaf-shaped pierced blades with a repeated geometric pattern of circular and diamond-shaped openings. The glasses are substantial clear glass vessels with faceted and fluted decoration, heavy bases and a distinctive notched rim designed to accommodate the spoon. Their form is particularly interesting in the context of traditional absinthe service. The carafe is a large, heavy cut-glass vessel with a square/faceted body, extensively cut decoration and a large faceted glass stopper. The base features radiating starburst-style cutting. No maker’s mark or inscription has been found on the carafe or stopper. Absinthe context The combination of specialized pierced spoons, notched glasses and a serving carafe is characteristic of the traditional absinthe ritual. The two included spoons are unmarked. The precise manufacturer, country of production and exact date of manufacture have not been established. No attribution to Baccarat, Saint-Louis, Val Saint Lambert or another named glassmaker is claimed. Construction and appearance The glasses and carafe are made of clear, heavy glass with extensive faceted decoration. The metal spoons retain their aged surface, including tarnishing, oxidation, scratches and areas of uneven coloration. They have not been polished for presentation. The original age and wear of the objects are intentionally retained.
