A charming collection of 9 vintage Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls, including traditional Tohoku-style kokeshi and two unusual Shogi-themed folk dolls. The collection consists of: - 7 traditional Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls - 2 unusual Shogi-themed wooden kokeshi with Shogi-piece shaped bases marked “Osho” (King) Several of the traditional kokeshi bear handwritten inscriptions, signatures and regional markings on their bases, indicating the work of individual Japanese craftsmen. The dolls display a beautiful variety of traditional designs, including hand-painted floral motifs, red and black rokuro-style bands, distinctive hairstyles and individual facial expressions. Some of the inscriptions appear to indicate traditional kokeshi production regions and artisan names. However, as the handwritten signatures can be difficult to interpret, the exact attribution of each craftsman has not been independently authenticated. The two smaller Shogi-themed pieces are particularly interesting.
