Chinese hardstone Panyou pebble –China- 20th Century

On offer is a natural untreated hard stone pebble, also called “worry stone”, or Panyou stone. This stone is equivalent to and resembling white Hetian jade. Purpose of this stone is to handle it. The practice of Panyou (盘玉) or holding a smooth stone in the hand and rubbing it with the thumb originates from various cultures, including Chinese culture, where it is deeply connected to meditation, mindfulness, and traditional medicine. The stone becomes smoother and glossier over time. This process is also referred to as "bringing the stone to life" or "feeding" the stone. This particular stone has an even smooth, glossy appearance, and a warm, translucent glow, from handling. An interesting piece!

About; When it comes to spinning or rubbing objects in the hand to relieve stress, China is also famous for Baoding balls (Baoding Jianshen Qiu). These are two metal or stone balls that are rotated in one palm to improve flexibility, relaxation, and brain stimulation. Additionally, flat, smooth gemstones (such as jade or rose quartz) or Buddha stone jade bracelets are widely used for Gua Sha, a scraping technique used to massage the face or body.

Has been identified as undefined hard-stone by measuring thermal conductivity and hardness and translucency. Also checked with UV light; which indicates a natural color. High hardness. Provenance: This Panyou stone comes from inland China. An interesting piece which might be suitable as an addition to your high-end collection or to present as a gift! Please see test results and pictures.
