A large wooden korwar figure from Ansus village on Yapen Island, in the Geelvink Bay region of West Papua. The figure has an imposing head with a projecting nose, rounded eyes and a strong angular profile. Below it, the arms curve forward around an openwork body, giving the carving depth and a striking silhouette from the side. Korwar figures are associated with ancestors in the artistic traditions of Geelvink Bay. This example is especially expressive in its broad head and bold, open construction. The wood shows surface wear, losses and visible cracks, including a split at the base, all of which should be considered part of its condition.
