Vintage Japanese enamel advertising and safety sign bearing the words “火の用心” (Hi no Yojin), meaning “Beware of Fire” or “Fire Prevention,” together with the company name “神崎林業株式会社” (Kanzaki Forestry Co., Ltd.). This is an interesting piece of Japanese industrial and corporate history from the Showa era. Kanzaki Forestry Co., Ltd. was associated with Kanzaki Paper Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s major paper manufacturers. Historical records confirm that Kanzaki Forestry Co., Ltd. existed by the early 1970s. The company name later disappeared following a corporate merger in 1998. Based on the documented history of the company together with the style and construction of the sign, this example is estimated to date from around the 1970s. The exact manufacturing year is unknown. The front features a striking red-and-white design with the large Japanese fire-safety message “火の用心.” Below it is the company name “神崎林業株式会社.” Because the company was involved in forestry and timber-related activities, fire prevention would have been particularly important. This type of company-branded safety sign may have been displayed at a forestry-related facility, timber yard, workplace or other company property. Its exact original installation location is unknown. The sign is made of enamel-coated metal (porcelain enamel) and has two mounting holes. The reverse is predominantly black enamel with a white border.
