Title: An Ode E (頌 E) Technique: Lithograph Artist: Toko Shinoda (篠田桃紅, 1913–2021) Hand-signed in pencil by the artist Limited edition, numbered 22/48 in pencil Paper size: 38 × 28.5 cm (15.0 × 11.2 in) Frame size: 52.5 × 41.2 × 2.4 cm (20.7 × 16.2 × 0.9 in) Material: Print paper, printed by K. Kimura Period: Mid‑1990s This is a limited-edition lithograph, An Ode E (頌 E), by world-renowned Japanese abstract master Toko Shinoda (篠田桃紅). The total edition size is 48; this example is number 22. Toko Shinoda is one of the most internationally celebrated Japanese abstract printmakers of the 20th century. Trained in calligraphy from childhood, she relocated to New York in 1956, merging Eastern calligraphic brushwork, negative-space aesthetics and Western modern abstract art. Her works are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the British Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. She is regarded as a national treasure-level artist of Japan. The An Ode (頌) series is her iconic body of work, highly regarded by international print collectors. The composition uses black, white and grey to form abstract calligraphic forms. Halftone textures combined with solid heavy ink blocks create a simple yet powerful visual, fully embodying the artist’s unique style of calligraphic abstraction. Titled AN ODE E in pencil at the lower left. Hand-signed “Toko Shinoda” and numbered 22/48 in pencil at the lower right. A blind stamp reading “PRINTED BY K. KIMURA” appears at the lower left of the sheet, the workshop mark of Kihachi Kimura, Toko Shinoda’s long-term lithography collaborator. The lithograph comes with a wooden frame, original mat and glass panel. The frame shows normal wear from handling. The paper exhibits subtle age toning, with several small spots along the sheet edges. Overall good condition for its age.
