Untitled, from the Wakamono series - Go Mishima (三島剛) - Japan
Go Mishima (三島剛, 1924–1988) occupies a distinctive place in postwar Japanese male figurative art and underground visual culture. His work is celebrated for its commanding representations of masculine beauty, elaborate tattooed bodies, disciplined linework and intense psychological presence.
This visually striking work comes from Mishima’s 1972 Wakamono (“Young Men”) series. A powerfully built young Japanese man stands with his back turned, looking sharply over his shoulder. His poised stance and direct profile give the figure a self-assured and commanding presence.
An elaborate irezumi-style tattoo extends across his back, shoulders, arms and upper thighs. Koi carp, curling waves, clouds and maple leaves are rendered in deep blue, orange, pink, green and pale grey. These intricate motifs contrast dramatically with the vivid red fundoshi and wrapped waistcloth. Mishima’s precise black linework and finely observed anatomy create a powerful balance of strength, sensuality and graphic elegance.
A compelling example of Mishima’s distinctive visual language, combining idealised masculine beauty, traditional Japanese tattoo imagery and the atmosphere of early 1970s Japanese underground art.
