Hasebe specialised in seasonal rural landscapes of Japan, practising self-carving and self-printing. Using the unique textural quality of woodblock printing, he depicted tranquil rural scenes with a subtle, refined style. This work depicts a winter snowscape: snow-laden conifers and snow-dusted shrubs surround a winding stream. A lone traveller carrying baggage on the wooden bridge adorns the composition, evoking the spacious solitude of the winter wilderness. The palette is dominated by blue-grey tones. Reserved white space represents thick snow, lending the piece a quiet wabi-sabi (侘寂) atmosphere. Focused on natural scenery, the work emphasises restrained colour and subtle mood, embodying the Japanese aesthetic concepts of wabi-sabi (侘寂) and yūgen (幽玄). The artist signed “Genjiro (権次呂)” in the lower left, alongside a red artist’s seal. The print comes with its original wooden frame, matting and glass panel. The frame bears minor wear from regular use. Due to age, the washi (和紙) paper shows slight natural toning. Overall condition is good.
