The damage must be reported to your local post office within 7 days of delivery, and promptly to us and Catawiki support. 【Product details】 A substantial traditional Japanese life size samurai armour set from the Showa period, made using authentic hand-construction techniques rather than the simplified methods commonly found on modern decorative armour. The armour combines black-lacquered iron plates with closely laced cords in purple, cream, vermilion and brown, together with decorated leather, patterned textiles and finely worked metal fittings. Traditional armour of this quality required extensive specialist handwork and could take an individual craftsman many months to complete. The helmet (kabuto) is fitted with tall kuwagata horns and a circular brass Sun Disc (Nichirin) maedate. The sun disc is a long-established motif in Japanese armour, associated with radiance, vitality and auspicious protection, and gives the helmet a particularly commanding appearance. It is accompanied by a black lacquered facial mask (menpo) with moustache and throat guard. The complete armour includes the helmet, facial mask and throat guard, cuirass, shoulder guards, armoured sleeves with fine chain mail and lacquered splints, thigh guards and shin guards. It also comes with a sectional wooden display stand and a black-lacquered wooden armour storage box decorated with the gold maki-e character “前” on the front. Fair to good vintage condition. As an older work made with traditional lacquer, leather, textiles and other natural materials, it shows age-related wear throughout, including scratches, stains and areas of dirt; losses and flaking to lacquer and leather; fading, fraying and small holes to textiles and lacing; discolouration to metal fittings; slight rust to some chain-mail elements; bending to decorative cords; adhesive residue around the inner mouth/chin area of the mask, which can become slightly tacky when wet; and general wear to the helmet, shoulder guards, thigh guards, armoured sleeves and shin guards. The armour box also has small scratches, minor lacquer loss and small chips to the wood at the corners.
