It is number 175 out of a total limited edition of 225 impressions. Produced with 16 printing blocks, 86 print runs and 3 applications of gold foil stamping. Produced by Geisaido (芸帅堂), published by Hokushin Gallery (北辰画廊). Shimoda Yoshihiro is an important print artist of Japan’s Heisei era. He specialises in woodcut depictions of nature and wild creatures, highly respected among collectors of modern Japanese prints. *Sankyo (山峡)* depicts a mountain gorge under the full moon. A stag, the sacred messenger of mountain deities in Shinto belief, stands in the foreground. A large luminous full moon dominates the background, with a bird flying among bare tree branches. The stag symbolises purity and the sacred spirit of nature; the full moon represents wholeness and eternity; the flying bird signifies transcendence and freedom. Together they convey the wabi-sabi concept of harmony between humanity and nature, creating a serene and ethereal night scene of the wilderness. Created using multi-block colour woodcut combined with three applications of gold foil stamping, the artwork has rich layers and a profound atmosphere. Titled vertically “Sankyo (山峡)” on the left margin. Hand-numbered in pencil “175/225” at the lower left. Hand-signed “Yoshihiro (義寛)” with red artist seal at the lower right. Comes with original linen portfolio, outer cardboard box and a colophon sheet (奥付), which records full technical data, craftsmen and publication information. Echizen Nagashi Housho handmade washi paper, retaining its natural hand-laid deckle edge. The paper has an inherent watermark, visible only when held up to light. Total weight including portfolio and packaging: approx. 2000g. Due to age, the paper shows natural toning and yellowing, with minor foxing spots. No tears or repairs. The portfolio and outer box show signs of age and accumulated dust. Overall condition is good for its age.
