Kawai Hirotsugu (1919–2008) – Paar von „Sōwan“-Teeschalen – Celadon- und Indigo-Glasuren – - Keramik - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert

This exceptional pair of Japanese tea bowls (“Sōwan”) was created by Kawai Hirotsugu (1919–2008) and is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako). The set consists of two complementary bowls executed in contrasting glazes: one in a soft celadon-green tone and the other in a deep indigo-blue glaze. Both bowls feature expressive applied relief decoration running across the surface, creating a sculptural quality that changes with light and viewing angle. Their subtly irregular forms and rich glaze textures reflect the spirit of handmade Japanese studio pottery. About the Artist Kawai Hirotsugu was a distinguished ceramic artist associated with the renowned Kawai family tradition, succeeding the artistic legacy established by Kawai Kanjiro (1890–1966), one of the founding figures of the Japanese Mingei (Folk Craft) Movement. Kanjiro, together with Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi, helped redefine the appreciation of everyday handcrafted objects as works of artistic and cultural significance. Through his close connection to this lineage, Hirotsugu inherited and continued the philosophy of beauty found in utility, emphasizing natural materials, spontaneous kiln effects, and the individuality of handmade forms. Works by Kawai Hirotsugu are appreciated for their balance between traditional folk-craft aesthetics and contemporary studio pottery expression, making them highly desirable among collectors of Japanese ceramics and Mingei-related works. Artistic Characteristics The present pair embodies many qualities associated with the Kawai tradition: Strong sculptural presence Rich, naturally varied glazes Hand-built decorative relief motifs Warm, tactile surfaces A harmonious dialogue between form and function The two bowls are conceived as a complementary pair, offering a striking contrast between light and dark while maintaining a unified artistic language. Condition Very good vintage condition. No visible cracks or repairs. Minor kiln marks, glaze irregularities, and firing characteristics are inherent to the handmade production process and should be regarded as part of the artistic character of the work. Dimensions (approx.) Green bowl: Diameter: 9 cm Height: 9 cm Blue bowl: Diameter: 9 cm Height: 9 cm Tomobako included. Shipping: The item will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
