Mask - Hanffasergewebe, Urushi-Lack, kokuso-Putz - Gigaku Karura (迦樓羅) Maske (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Japanese Gigaku Karura (迦楼羅) Mask Craft: Kanshitsu (乾漆) dry lacquer technique Dimensions: approx H 19 × W 13 × D 10.5 cm (H 7.5 × W 5.1 × D 4.1 in) Weight: 296 g Material: Hemp cloth, urushi lacquer, kokuso plaster (wood powder mixed with urushi lacquer) Period: Late Meiji to Taisho period (c.1900–1920) This is a traditional Japanese Gigaku mask. Karura (迦楼羅 / Garuda) originates from the golden-winged bird of Indian mythology. Introduced to Japan, it served as a ritual mask for ancient Gigaku ceremonies, and is a highly representative classic mask of early Japanese folk performing arts. This mask is crafted using traditional Kanshitsu (乾漆) dry lacquer technique. Layers of hemp cloth soaked in urushi lacquer are laminated to form a hollow base. Facial features are modelled with kokuso plaster (wood powder blended with urushi lacquer), followed by polishing, urushi lacquer coating and painting. The Karura (迦楼羅 / Garuda) mask has a striking, powerful bird-head form with a stern expression. It features a single crest atop the head and a pointed beak. The eye sockets are outlined with vermilion lacquer, with gilded remnants remaining inside. The pupils and mouth are hollowed out, and it holds a sacred pearl in its mouth. Its design references the historic Gigaku masks preserved in Shōsōin, representing the classic style of Japanese Gigaku masks. Cord holes are reserved on the reverse of the mask. An old handwritten washi paper label marked “迦楼羅面 (Karura-men)” remains on the interior. Consistent with its age, the lacquer surface bears natural patina and ageing, with partial wear and chipping of the lacquer layer. No cracks or repairs. Overall condition is good for its age. ``` ## 改动说明 Shipping Notice Due to service adjustments, Taiwan Post EMS will suspend parcel deliveries to the following countries effective March 10, 2026: United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Israel, Pakistan, Maldives, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, Egypt, Morocco.
