Jizaikagi 自在鉤 (adjustable hook) used in a hearth - Schnitzerei - Antikes japanisches Fisch-förmiges Jizai-Kagi 自在鉤 – Aufwendig geschnitzter Karpfen mit Eisenhaken - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)
A distinctive Japanese Jizai Kagi (自在鉤), featuring a beautifully carved carp-shaped wooden yokogi (横木), traditionally associated with the Japanese irori hearth.
The Jizai Kagi was an important traditional household implement used above the irori, the sunken hearth found in traditional Japanese houses. It was used to suspend cooking pots, kettles and other vessels over the fire, while allowing their height to be adjusted according to the desired heat. The horizontal wooden member used as part of the adjustable mechanism was known as the yokogi (横木), and these were sometimes carved into decorative forms such as fish, fans, gourds and other auspicious subjects.
This particular example is especially attractive for its strongly sculptural carp form and the remarkably detailed carving of the fish.
The carp has a large and expressive head, carefully modelled eyes, mouth and gill covers, broad fins and a powerful, elongated body. The entire body is covered with individually carved overlapping scales. Each scale is deeply defined, creating a rich three-dimensional texture across the body.
The large tail is also carefully carved, with long flowing lines following the natural shape of the tail fin. The dorsal fin and side fins are clearly shaped in relief, while the facial features have been simplified yet effectively modelled to give the carp a strong and lively character.
The carving is particularly attractive when viewed from different angles. The scales catch the light differently across the surface, emphasizing the depth of the carving and the rounded form of the body. The combination of the dark wood, deeply carved scales and flowing fins gives the fish a powerful yet elegant appearance.
The Meaning of the Fish
The fish-shaped yokogi is not merely decorative. In traditional Japanese folk belief, fish were associated with water and were therefore regarded as an auspicious symbol connected with protection from fire. Since the irori was the centre of cooking, warmth and daily family life, protection from accidental fire was especially important.
There is also an interesting traditional interpretation concerning the eyes of the fish. Fish have no eyelids and were therefore associated with something that does not sleep.
In this interpretation, the fish symbolized the wish to remain constantly watchful over the hearth — never falling asleep, never taking one's eyes off the fire, and helping to prevent accidents caused by leaving the fire unattended. The fish could therefore be understood as a symbolic guardian watching over the household fire.
This combination of water as a symbol of protection from fire and the sleepless nature of the fish gives the fish-shaped Jizai Kagi a fascinating connection between practical household life, folk belief and traditional Japanese aesthetics.
It is worth noting that interpretations of the fish motif can vary according to region and tradition. Nevertheless, the fish-shaped Jizai Kagi is closely connected with auspicious symbolism and the traditional wish for safety and protection of the household.
Traditional Rope and Iron Fittings
The original-style rope and metal fittings remain attached to the piece. The rope passes through the metal hardware and forms part of the traditional suspension and adjustment mechanism of the Jizai Kagi.
The aged rope shows considerable signs of use and natural wear, while the iron fittings have developed a dark, rusty surface through age. These elements add considerably to the character of the object and help convey its connection with its original traditional function.
Rather than being presented as a modern decorative reproduction, the combination of the carved wooden yokogi, aged rope and iron fittings gives the piece the appearance and atmosphere of a traditional Japanese household implement that has been used and preserved over time.
Aged Wooden Surface and Condition
The wooden surface has developed a very dark brown to almost black appearance, with warmer reddish-brown highlights appearing on the raised areas and around the carved details.
There are numerous small scratches, abrasions, areas of rubbing and other signs of age and previous handling throughout the surface. These marks are particularly visible on the raised scales, fins and other exposed areas of the carving.
The rope is also aged and shows natural fraying and wear, while the iron fittings show visible oxidation and rust. These characteristics should be considered part of the present condition of the piece and contribute to its authentic aged appearance.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A Fine Example of Japanese Folk Art
This Jizai Kagi is particularly appealing because the practical function of a traditional irori implement is combined with the artistic character of a carefully carved wooden fish.
The powerful carp, deeply carved scales, expressive face, detailed fins and broad tail create a strong sculptural presence. At the same time, the surviving rope and iron fittings preserve an important part of the object's traditional character.
The dark aged surface is especially effective, emphasizing the relief of the scales and giving the carp a dignified and substantial appearance. The fish also carries traditional auspicious associations with water, fire protection and vigilance over the household hearth.
For collectors of Japanese folk art, traditional household objects, irori-related antiques and carved wooden objects, this is a distinctive and characterful example. It combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship, practical household history and folk symbolism in a single object, while the beautifully carved carp gives it a particularly strong visual presence.
The combination of the finely carved carp, deeply textured scales, aged wooden surface, traditional rope and iron fittings makes this Jizai Kagi more than simply a functional household implement. It is an evocative piece of Japanese folk art that preserves the atmosphere of life around the traditional irori hearth.
