Hahnfamilie in Gold – Vintage Takaoka Bronze Gedenkplatte von Watanabe Kansui - Bronze - 渡辺環水 Watanabe Kansui(1929-) - Japan - 1900–2000

Item Description This is a striking cast bronze "kazari-zara" (decorative wall/display plate) from the Takaoka Dōki tradition of Toyama Prefecture, Japan — a region renowned for over 400 years of cast metalwork. The circular plate is finished in warm gold-tone patina with a raised, sculptural relief depicting a rooster, a hen, and two chicks — a classic Japanese motif symbolizing family, prosperity, and the zodiac sign of the Rooster. The rim is decorated with a delicate scrolling arabesque pattern picked out in soft green patina against the gold ground, and the rooster's comb and wattle are hand-painted in deep red for vivid contrast. The piece is signed on the front in relief characters reading "環水" (Kansui), the professional name of caster and metal artist Watanabe Kansui. The reverse is left in a matte black patina and bears an engraved dedication in gilt characters, indicating the plate was originally produced as a commemorative piece marking the completion of a new poultry facility ("新鶏舎落成記念") for an agricultural cooperative in Kagawa, dated June, Heisei 29 (2017). This inscription adds a layer of authentic provenance and historical interest to the piece, while the rooster motif itself remains a beautifully decorative and symbolically auspicious image on its own. The plate is designed to be displayed upright using a wooden or resin stand (included in the photographs) and would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Japanese metalwork, zodiac-themed art, or bronze okimono. Size Height: 2 cm Width: 23.5 cm Depth: 23.5 cm Weight 1282 g / 1.282 kg Condition Excellent vintage condition consistent with long-term storage; no significant damage, with the original hand-applied polychrome finish intact. Artist Profile Watanabe Kansui 渡辺環水(1929-)is a Japanese caster from the Takaoka bronze-casting tradition in Toyama Prefecture. Born in 1929, the fourth son of Saburo, Kansui was first accepted into the prestigious Nitten (日展) national art exhibition in 1968 and has been consistently selected in subsequent years. He was also first selected for the Japan Contemporary Crafts Exhibition in 1970, going on to receive a special selection prize and a craft award in later exhibitions, and was chosen to represent the exhibition abroad on multiple occasions. Kansui currently holds status as an associate member of Nitten, is a member of the Japan Contemporary Crafts Association, and serves as a judge for prefectural and municipal art exhibitions.
