The central section of the vase features a black lacquer ground decorated with a magnificent phoenix and peonies, rendered in gold using maki-e, a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The phoenix, a mythical bird, symbolises peace, harmony, and auspicious times. It is often regarded as a bringer of good fortune and a sign of virtuous rule. Peonies, known as the 'king of flowers,' represent prosperity, honour, and refined beauty. Together, these motifs convey a wish for enduring good fortune and grace. The top section includes an insert made of copper, adding a refined contrast in materials and allowing practical use as a flower vessel. There are signs of use and age, including minor wear, discolouration, and fraying of the cord ends. The wooden box shows natural patina and small scratches. Please refer to the photos for the detailed condition. This elegant drum-shaped vase harmoniously combines symbolism and craftsmanship, making it an excellent decorative and collectible piece. ※Important: For Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco and Portugal, orders of €150 or less cannot currently be shipped due to the new €3 customs duty/IOSS issue.
