Japanese Hanging Scroll (Kakejiku) – Moriyama Shozan (森山祥山), Signed – Traditional Japanese Ink Painting – Showa Period About the Artwork An elegant Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) featuring traditional ink painting, accompanied by a handwritten signature, red artist’s seal and inscriptions. The composition displays expressive brushwork in different shades of black and grey, reflecting the aesthetics of traditional Japanese sumi-e painting. The artwork bears a signature reading “Shozan” (祥山), together with a red seal. An additional handwritten inscription on the reverse identifies the name “Moriyama Shozan” (森山祥山). The inscription on the painting appears to indicate Showa 12 (1937), placing the work in the early Showa period. About Moriyama Shozan (森山祥山) Moriyama Shozan (born 1905), also known as Moriyama Kyutaro, was an important figure in the history of the Sansai-ryu school of Japanese tea ceremony. Sansai-ryu is a historic tradition of Japanese tea culture associated with Hosokawa Tadaoki (1563–1646), also known as Hosokawa Sansai, a celebrated samurai lord and tea master. Shozan studied Japanese tea traditions at Koto-in, a subtemple of the renowned Daitoku-ji Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto. He subsequently established Kansui-an in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, dedicating himself to preserving and reviving the Sansai-ryu tradition. In 1954, his position as head of the Sansai-ryu school was formally recognised by the Hosokawa family. His contribution to the preservation of traditional Japanese tea culture remains documented in the history of the school. The present hanging scroll bears the name Moriyama Shozan; however, its attribution to the historical tea master has not been independently authenticated.
