Der kauende Hase - Buchsbaum - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)
Netsuke - Crouching rabbit - Boxwood - Signed - Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)
A boxwood netsuke of a crouching rabbit, its ears laid back along its body and its legs tucked neatly beneath it.
The fur is rendered with dense, finely carved strokes that follow the curves of the body, giving the piece a soft, lively texture. The face is alert, with inlaid dark eyes and a carefully modelled nose and mouth. The underside is fully carved, showing the paws and a radiating fur pattern, with the cord holes (himotoshi) worked naturally into the design.
The rabbit is a popular subject in Japanese art, associated with the moon and with good fortune.
Signature
Signed on the underside.
