A traditional Japanese wooden Hannya mask (般若面), featuring the dramatic expression and distinctive horns associated with one of the most recognizable masks of Japanese Noh theatre. The Hannya represents a woman transformed by intense jealousy, sorrow and resentment into a supernatural being. Its expression is famously complex: viewed from different angles, the mask can appear frightening and angry, yet also convey sadness and emotional suffering. This example is carved from wood and finished with a predominantly white face, contrasting black horns, golden eyes and teeth, and vivid red detailing around the mouth. The deeply carved features, open mouth and prominent fangs give the mask a particularly powerful and theatrical presence. The reverse remains largely exposed, clearly showing the wooden construction and hand-worked interior. Dimensions: 26 x 17 x 8 cm Good condition: there are stains and wear off from aging and using, please also take a look at the listed photos for a reference.
