The black lacquer exterior is richly decorated in gold maki-e with auspicious treasure motifs symbolising prosperity, longevity and good fortune, including the magic mallet, sacred jewels and scrolls. Areas of gold-sprinkled nashiji lacquer add further depth and brilliance to the decoration. The interiors are finished in vivid vermilion lacquer, creating a beautiful contrast with the black and gold exterior. Two separate lids are included, allowing the tiers to be divided and displayed in different combinations. Dating from the late Edo to Meiji period, 19th century, this elegant piece reflects the refined lacquer craftsmanship of the period. The original wooden storage box is included. There are age-related scratches and wear, small losses to the lacquer and gold decoration, areas of restoration and discoloration, and a small dent to one side. The wooden box also shows wear, discoloration and scratches.
